A standard national operator's license (O-licence) allows you to transport your own goods and other people's goods in the UK, and to take loaded trailers to and from UK ports as part of an international journey. You'll need an O-licence if you use a goods vehicle that weighs more than 3.5 tonnes gross plated weight or has an unladen weight of more than 1,525 kg to transport goods for hire or reward. 

The Operator Licencing system is complex and there are many exemptions that may or may not apply . It is always best to seek specialist advice as it is possible to apply for a licence that is not required, or worse, face conviction for operating without a licence.
